Winter Running Clothes- Gifts for safety and comfort

It is hard to stay motivated to get active in the winter months. We sometimes we have to deep deep and use our tips for successful winter running. New winter running clothes can really motivate you to run and are crucial for safety and comfort. Here are some gift ideas for the runner(s) in your life, or perhaps the potential new year running newbie? Having quality trainers is THE starting point. Finding out what you need can be confusing at first so try a shop offer advice and running analysis. If you fancy something innovative, read our review of On Cloudflyers.

1.A Base layer:

Wearing a base layer creates maximum warmth whilst maintaining a lightweight feel. Previously mentioned in Jon’s On Cloudflyer post, our favourite is the Under Armour Coldgear baselayer.

2. Gloves:

Gloves make a huge difference to comfort when running and also prevent chapped, dry hands. There are many that are reflective too- great for those dark night runs. I love my Nike running gloves which keep my hands warm and (with their towelling palms) dry. Pictured are the men’s dri-fit gloves- Jon’s favourites.

3. Headbands/ Hat:

Be sure not to neglect your ears in the cold weather. Wearing a running headband keeps ears warm but allows the head to breathe. Sweaty Betty’s Thermal Earwarmer  is extremely cosy and also reflective. I also love my (very worn) Nike band.  Jon is a big fan of the Ronhill reflective beanie for those really cold days. An option for keeping your ears healthy is Auris ear care.

4. The right socks

Keep your feet warm, comfortable and protected with the many quality brands of running socks available. My top choices are HillyThorlo low cut and Sweaty Betty. These brands are excellent for those of us with smaller feet as they start at size 3.5.

5. Lights and Reflectors

Anything bright and reflective is a must for the winter months. My Sub4 long sleeve top is super bright and warm with a baselayer underneath. Lightupu have a wide range of lights that easily fit to your trainers, clothing etc. Also recommended is the head torch from Alpkit. I have this on my Christmas wish list!

Other winter running clothes and essentials:

  • A good moisturiser and lip balm to protect from the elements
  • A reflective, rainproof running jacket

Thumbs up from these guys in their Pointy Faces reflective snoods. They are the experts at running after all!
