There are many brilliant cruelty free brands available online and in our high street shops and supermarkets. Cruelty Free Kitty have a very comprehensive online list. If, like me, you are passionate about using cruelty free cosmetics and household products you may fancy trying some…
Nestling on the banks of the Humber estuary is Winteringham Fields, a superb Michelin star restaurant with rooms. We opt for the couples retreat package (a Christmas present to ourselves), which includes an eight course surprise tasting menu, an overnight stay, and continental breakfast.
The package allows you to secure any room that is available at the time of booking. We booked well in advance and managed to get a suite which was large and airy, with a very comfortable king size bed and luxury bathroom.
Arrival and canapes:
We are welcomed out of our car by a friendly, helpful member of staff who shows us to our room A knock at the door soon followed and we are served a complimentary welcome drink-a woo woo! This is a fun little touch, a great way to relax into the stay. Then to begin the meal, on to drinks and Canapes.
The evening begins with a gin and tonic and a couple of delightful canapes. A crisp Lincolnshire poacher mini tart topped with a small delicious piece of smoked eel, and my favourite a thin slice of sausage roll with spicy sauce.
Eight course surprise dinner menu:
A roaring fire greets us as we enter the beautiful dining room and we settle in, hungry and excited, for our first plates arrival. A super-tasty beetroot dish with whipped cod roe which has a wonderful depth of flavour.
Next up is a stunning dish of potato and Jerusalem artichoke, served on a striking red plate. Finished with a moreish and rich cheese fondue sauce. A little Iberico ham brings the salty edge to this very clever dish.
If you like truffle (and we do), this risotto is for you. As it arrives the aroma fills the air. The risotto is perfectly cooked and as you would expect is full of earthy flavours (which the pickled enoki cut through). This is decadent and had us scraping our plates!
Mackerel comes served two ways on this dish. A pan fried fillet, and a pitch-perfect tartare served inside a silky kohlrabi cannelloni.
Next up the cod. The lovely smoked element on this plate comes from the mussels which really bring it to life. A perfectly cooked piece of fish.
The venison dish is the star of the show for me. Served with a smooth but sweet parsnip puree and a wonderful mix of slow cooked and fermented red cabbage. The meat is rich and tender and is completely delicious.
On to the desserts so we start with a refreshing coconut meringue with white chocolate and lime. This is a great palate cleanser that sets us up nicely for the finale.
What a way to finish a simply brilliant menu and Mel’s favourite. A very dark, rich chocolate delice, thinly sliced and served with a malted bread ice cream which is smooth and delicious.
Cheese, drinks and petit four:
You don’t have to have cheese or a coffee with petit four, but we do. I would highly recommend you do too. I loved the little blackberry macaron and the coffee was smooth and delicious.
During the meal we drank a lovely local Lincolnshire Solaris wine from Oven’s Farm Vineyard. We actually ordered some of this for delivery when we got home too!
Michelin restaurants with rooms:
As mentioned in our review of Restaurant Sat Bains, we love restaurants that have rooms as its a real luxury just to walk back to your room, full and content, and slump into your bed.
Staying also means you can wake up the next day to a continental breakfast to send you on your way.
We had a fantastic time at Winteringham fields simply because the food was of the highest standard. The menu was exciting and inventive, and packed full of flavour. A fantastic meal and one to recommend for sure.
