Summer Running Essentials for Women
As the temperatures rise, it is time to consider those summer running essentials. The right kit can make a run more pleasurable and most importantly keep you safe and healthy.
Feet:
Trainers- As with running in all conditions, getting a good pair of training shoes is absolutely crucial. If you are new to running, try an in–store gait analysis at a local running shop. Cambridgeshire based runners can head to Advance Performance. I love Asics support trainers.
Keep your feet blister free, comfortable and protected with the one of the many quality brands of running socks available. My top choices are Hilly, Thorlo low cut and Sweaty Betty. These brands are excellent for those of us with smaller feet as they start at size 3.5.
Skin:
Protect your skin from harmful rays with a good quality moisturiser containing an SPF. I love Liz Earle’s tinted moisturiser which is also cruelty free. Arbonne is a great vegan friendly option.

Head:
Invest in a cap to protect you from the sun. There are many available which are made from cool, moisture wicking fabric to keep you feeling dry and cool. Try Sweaty Bettys Swiftie Running Cap– fast drying and lightweight. Also adjustable. Some runners also wear sunglasses to protect their eyes from not only the sun but the inevitable bugs!
Body:
Opt for a moisture wicking, breathable t shirt. Some brands have t-shirts with SPF too. My favourites are the New Balance Ice tops, that help to keep you cool and feel airy as you run. You can also buy tank (sleeveless) versions.
There is nothing worse than shorts that rise as you run. Sweaty Betty clothes are designed by women, for women and stay put! Try their contour workout shorts.
I also love my New Balance Impact Capris. They really stay put and are super comfortable around the tummy.
Hydrate:
If you don’t like carrying a bottle, or are having a shorter run, make sure that you are well hydrated before you set off and rehydrate when you get home.
Try a hydration sachet like Arbonne Phytosport. They also have great natural energy fizz sticks for pre-run.
For longer runs,try a running specific bottle (which are easy to carry), or a Camelbak pack to keep your hands free. Recommendations for water bottles here.
