Where to Eat- A day in Cambridge

Where to Eat- A day in Cambridge
Cambridge is a beautiful city full of history and culture. It is also excellent for food. The food offering has grown rapidly and there are now many excellent places to eat if you are lucky enough to be spending a day in Cambridge. For a quick bite or a special occasion meal, here are some of our favourite places to eat yourself through a day in Cambridge.

Hot Numbers:

Start the day with a coffee at Hot Numbers. The original shop (just off Mill road) is still going strong but there is also a second branch on Trumpington street. This is more central and ideal for a rest after a trek round the Fitzwilliam Museum across the road. They roast their own coffee beans from sources around the world. The best coffee in the city, possibly….

Steak and Honour:

Have lunch at Steak and Honour. My favourite is the Classic Riverside Beef- brioche bun, lettuce, onion, gherkin, French’s mustard and Heinz tomato ketchup- yum! Delicious burgers with regular features and specials. They still have the cool little Citroen vans that they started out with at regular spots around the city too.

Smokeworks:

Around the corner on Free School Lane,  Smokeworks is also a great option-especially the fantastic lunch time deal (a main, fries and drink for £9.50). Main dishes may include a smoked pork burrito, ribs or a southern fried chicken wrap. Extremely moreish! gelato gelato
Jack’s Gelato:
For dessert, pop across the road for a scoop or two (or even three!) of Jacks delicious gelato. In my opinion easily the best ice-cream in Cambridge and possibly some of the best I have ever eaten . Flavours are seasonal and change daily (see the changing board), some examples include classic mint choc chip, salted treacle, elder flower and chocolate sorbet. Outstanding.
where to drink

The Pint Shop:

Have drink at the Pint Shop. Their ever-changing beer chalk board offers a range of superb beers to suit all tastes and a gin list to please even the most demanding connoisseur. Bar snacks are optional but the scotch eggs are particularly pleasing. The meal offerings here are also excellent.
Restaurant 22 Cambridge

Restaurant 22:

Finish your day with a real treat at Restaurant 22. Go for the tasting menu and enjoy beautiful plates of flavoursome and exciting food. Some examples are their wood pigeon served with pear, celeriac and pine, or 45 day aged beef with bone marrow, onion and maple. Extremely reasonably priced for the quality of service and cooking.

A day in Cambridge continued:

If only we had more hours to fit in more food these places would also be a must:
Fitzbillies– for their delicious (and famous) Chelsea buns. You can actually buy them as a gift in a pretty box.
Bread and Meat– Big, tasty, meaty (or vegetarian) sandwiches!
